We spent our last couple days of summer, last week, at my parents house, sleeping out in a tent, swimming in the lake, roasting s’mores over the fire pit, and soaking up a little uninterrupted family time. Something that has been hard to come-by this past month or two between house projects and work schedules. Didn’t think I could feel anymore grateful for my people as we drove the 40-ish minutes home, but the feeling escalated quickly when we returned to a sky full of smoke, reports of fires and road closures, losing power, and then Johan getting an “all hands on deck” page to go help put fires out 30 minutes later.
Saying goodbye to him was so hard. Keeping my act together so I didn’t freak out the kids was harder. Watching the kids say goodbye was the hardest. It all happened so fast and we knew so little about what was going on, how many or how close the fires were, or when we would see him next. Ugh.
Luckily he was home 24 hours later and the fires never got closer than a mile to us. However, several of our friends had to evacuate their homes, the main fire is still burning, and the smoke is too thick to do much outside. School was also postponed for a lot of the kids’ friends which made my designated week of getting my chillens back on schedule and prepped for homeschool pretty unsuccessful, lol. Not that you’ll find me complaining about an extended summer break!
I’ll share an update on how school is going later this week, but for now let’s flashback to our last official day of summer at Gigi + Papa’s!
We did a little tent camping, backyard style, and I gained major brownie points for staying alllll night. Little did the kids know, by the time I was over it and ready to head into the house, I had also heard way too many strange noises and was too afraid to make the long walk to civilization. In my defense, my parents live in the woods with all kinds of wildlife, I have zero outdoorsy skills, and I didn’t want Waffles (who was also being a scaredy-cat) to get eaten on the way, either. Staying in the tent and simply not sleeping seemed like the better of the two options, lol.
We got to see Johan and my dad set up the latest toy to show up on the beach — a little sail boat! Can’t wait for her maiden voyage!
I love when they are friends!
Tilly’s swimsuit — wearing a size 10 and is 4′ 10-1/2″
My swimsuit is from Lulu – these bottoms in size 6, and sized up in the top to an 8 — won’t be quitting my tevas anytime soon either
Espen in our favorite long sleeve tees – 35% off rn! – and the classic slides in black + white
Poppy’s shorts are a new fave — her swimsuit is from an old collection I did with Olivia + Ocean
FREEDOM!!! After mom gets the tent pic she wanted, lol.
These two are pretty cute together :)
Johan’s shorts from here – great all purpose and swimming, runs tts.
Gigi joined us for the last swim out to the float… the best!
Still on that gratitude high after saying goodbye to summer with my people and then a week of unplanned uncertainty. Excited for our new chapter of homeschool for the big kids and kindergarten for Poppy!!!
