MOM + MINI: HOW TO WEAR TIE DYE WITHOUT FEELING LIKE YOU’RE AT CAMP

You guys, tie-dye is back in a big way lately and even though I’m always a fan (forever a hippie, beach bum + camp kid at heart) I’m even more in love with how the carefree print has gotten a more grown-up (think skirts and silk tops) and practical (lots of color options!) update that makes it easier to add to your everyday wardrobe.

The tricky things about trends is that sometimes they stick around and become staples and other times they’re “so last month” the day after you decide to hop on the bandwagon (wah-wah) — so it can be tricky to decide what to invest in and what to pass on. Since I already have a tie-dye shirt dress from Sonnet James (I think she has a new one coming out this spring/summer) I was planning on the latter, but then I stumbled upon this t-shirt from Zara and, considering how often I wear t-shirts, decided it was meant to be.

Sharing a few ways to style the colorful swirly pattern from your youth over on IGTV but also took some snaps of my favorite look to share below and included all the links!

OUTFIT No. 1 (pictured) | tie dye tee from zara, dot pants from madewell (I sized down one), sneakers are reebok, denim jacket is old from J.Crew (similar), purse is from Target

OUTFIT No. 2 (in video) |tie dye tee from zara, agolde jeans from shopbop, slingback shoes from everyone, duster cardigan is old from nordstrom

OUTFIT No. 3 (in video)| tie dye tee from zara, leggings are from Lulu Lemon, sweatshirt is topshop from nordstrom

During my search for tie-dye I found some cute socks for Griff (who also happens to be a fan of the print)…

GRIFFIN’S OUTFIT DETAILS | pants, sweatshirt, socks and sneakers all from J.Crew (always stock up when they have a 40% off sale!)

See the top pic? When he was done leaning on me he said, “mom! lean on my back now!” and then couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working, lol. Definitely one of those “you had to be there” moments, but too funny not to write down here.

Here’s my closing argument… If you like to have fun, then wear tie-dye. Ha ha! JK, I know it’s not for everyone, but you can buy it for your kids because living vicariously through them (in a healthy way of course) is one of the best parts about being a parent!

If you haven’t already, go take a look at my IGTV video and let me know what you think!? Make sure you watch to the end to see how we embarrass Tilly :)

MOM + MINI OOTW: LAYERED JUMPSUITS FOR WINTER TO SPRING

Ah, the super easy, layer-able, go-to one piece that is the answer to anything that’s coming your way in the day — phone confrence, preschool, drop-offs, playdates, doctor appointments, date night out (or in), cooking dinner, weekend play, you name it.

Same goes for the kids!

Don’t hesitate to grab one from your spring bin and throw on over a turtleneck or purchase a cute new one and layer under a jacket or chunky sweater for extra comfort until the temps warm up… can you tell I’m in a hurry?

It’s supposed to be in the 60’s this weekend and while it’s not warm enough for a jumper with cutouts, I can’t wait to style this one with simple slides and no under layer. For now a turtleneck, socks, sneakers and felt hat will do!

WEARING | turtleneck, jumpsuit (same in red and black), sneakers, hat

Wait until you see Poppy’s adorable outfit details!!!

How cute is this jumpsuit and bow by Hadley Girl?

I’ve been a huge fan of Kelsey and her shop for years but this was our first time trying her clothes… It definitely won’t be our last. Usually my biggest gripe about buying one pieces for the girls (and boys when they were younger) is that they grow out of them so quickly but with the Hadley romper, the ties make it adjustable and also make the outfit feel extra special.

Can’t forget about our jumprope…. take a peek at the DIY HERE from a few years back. Perfect for easter baskets and bday gifts!

How do you feel about a good jumpsuit…. closet hero or not worth the extra hassle in the lou?

MOM + MINI: DRESSING FOR REAL LIFE

One of the most helpful things I’ve done for my wardrobe (and wallet) was to organize it by category and then for a week or two, keep track of the types of outfits I actually wear. My categories were simple: athletic or lounge, casual (t-shirt/sweater and jeans), almost fancy (maybe a jumpsuit, sweater dress, dressier top, etc.) and fancy (think wedding or formal event). Then I tallied up what I wore throughout the week and compared it to what I had in my closet. Afterwards, there were a couple things that surprised me. 1. I change my clothes during the day more often than I realized and 2. I need to give the althetic and leisure section of my closet a little TLC because it’s what I wore almost half the time yet only made up about 10-20 percent of my closet. Ironically, it’s also not usually what I add to my online shopping carts or what I spend my clothing budget on.

I haven’t done the same thing for the kids yet, but I’m guessing they’d get similar results. The good news is (and the main reason to do this!) is that it’s harder to buy something I don’t need (i.e. another silk top I’ll never wear or jeans super similar to another pair I already have) when I know that what my closet does need (and what will make my life function better) is a new pair of leggings or joggers and a zip up instead. Same goes for the rest of the fam… if I keep buying Poppy jeans and frilly tops but she lives in play dresses, tees and leggings or sweats, then I’m wasting my money and making it harder to get her dressed in the morning. No bueno.

MY OUTFIT | tee and joggers from everlane (wearing small in both), sneakers from veja (i have these and these on my wish list too!)

POPPY’S OUTFIT | tee and sneakers from zara, sweat pants from childhoods, roller skates from amazon

I tried to take a pic of my outfit notes so you could see, but the pink pencil didn’t show up in the photo… Oops sorry!

ESPEN’S OUTFIT | we absolutely love the tees and sweatpants for boys at J.Crew

Do you guys feel like your wardrobe reflects what you wear or what you would to wear?

OOTW: WHAT TO WEAR WHILE WAITING ON SPRING

It’s pretty obvious by these pics that we’re still living in a winter wonderland (Christmas music has even made it’s way back into the rotation) but my heart (and body temperature) are craving spring so I recently grabbed a few spring-ish clothing items from the back of our closets and out of season bins and moved them to the front. They’re easy to add under winter layers without looking out of place and add a hint of color to all the fall/wintery neutrals.

Just a little style tip for anyone that’s craving something fresh and light!

Most of our clothes are from past seasons but I’ll link what I can below.

I know they’re spendy, but I can’t recommend ugg boots enough. We all wear them daily around the house (grabbing the mail, jumping on the trampoline, etc.) but they’re also great for out and about — esp. for the kids ;)

POPPY | striped jumpsuit is old from zara (love these overalls tho), coat old from j.crew

GRIFFIN | jeans from peek (on sale!), sweatshirt old from childhoods

TILLY | sweatshirt is recent from zara

ESPEN | sweatshirt old from j.crew (but zara has lots of cute ones to choose from), jeans from gap (on sale!)

JOHAN | baby blue top from j.crew (sold out, but I love this throwback jacket as an option), striped tee is also old from j.crew

ME :) | jacket (sold out) from madewell and striped top is past season, jeans are levis (love this pair!), rain boots are sold out but I love this pair.

I call this little collage “you win some, you lose some” and I definitely lost this one, ha! Sometimes I she makes ya work for those smooches!

I luv him.

Are you guys ready for spring or still soaking up the winter vibes?

Also, let me know if you have any wardrobe hangups… I’d love to help!

OOTW: IN MY FEELINGS + DAD JEANS

5 THINGS LATELY:

  1. I rarely feel clever or witty or creative enough to write blog posts (or instagram captions for that matter). As a result I have a huge backlog of content to share and I’m realizing just how much I let my feelings get in the way. How annoying is that, ha!? Like wanting to get healthy but not feeling like drinking a green smoothie or running those stadium stairs, ya know? Going to work on not being in my feelings!
  2. Wearing these 90’s dad jeans from Agolde and this turtleneck (wearing a small) on repeat. Have you guys ventured away from skinny jeans (which are still very much in style) or are they your go-to? I’ve found a few really great non-skinny denim options for under $100 that I’ll try to share next week if you guys are interested?!
  3. The power of a really cute pair of shoes to take a basic/lazy outfit to an effortless one will never cease to amaze me!
  4. Cup-O-Noodles also never cease to amaze me. My kids discovered them this past football season when we wouldn’t allow them to get candy at the concession stand and have been obsessed ever since. Every once in awhile I grab a few to surprise them with as an after school snack and can’t resist eating one myself… you guys they are as good (maybe better?) than I remember them being!
  5. I talked about Botox earlier this week on Stories after a consultation at a spa and must have received 40 messages. Almost everyone who has done it says, “it’s the best!” and the other half of people that messaged said it’s not for them (for varying reasons) and then there were a handful of undecided people (that’s me too!). My appointment was made regarding some sunspots I have on my cheeks but quickly escalated to the specialist talking about alllllll my skin flaws (ha!) and how much younger I’d look with fillers and botox, lol. What a crazy time we live in! So many options out there it’s hard to know what to do and not do. Kinda fun talking about it with you guys.

What’s been on your mind lately?

OOTW: A LITTLE RED DRESS + A DATE NIGHT

I go through stages when it comes to my color preferences and the things I buy for my closet or home. Depending on the season, I tend to gravitate towards a certain color, palette or hue, but there is one color I will always say yes to no matter the season or trends:

RED.

It’s bold and bright and yet feels very classic. A red dress or coat is the perfect statement and yet a pop of red on manicured nails or a pair of shoes is just right too. It really can do no wrong.

Which is also how I feel about this red sonnet james dress (wearing xs)… it can do no wrong. I’ve worn it to church, date night, running errands and you can bet I’ll be putting it on for all of the kids’ Christmas performances and classroom parties.

A few other sonnet james red dress options, here, here and here. Oh, and don’t forget to checkout their 12 days of giving. (not an ad, just love their dresses and brand!)

A few pics from when I wore my red dress during our stay at the Palladian Hotel in Seattle — which we booked while using the kayak app and was honestly one of my favorite hotel stays to date. (also not an ad :)

Will never turndown a chance to jump on a bed. Also, there is something so silly and fun about getting our camera out when it’s just the two of us. Makes me feel like I’m a teenager again!

Crushing hard on the pic of Johan holding flowers :)

More red!

The view just to the right of our hotel. And Pike Place Market was a quick 5 minute walk away!

See what I mean by teenager, ha! “Take a pic of me snuggling Angelina Jolie!”

How this hotel managed to be fancy yet quirky is beyond me but it worked so well. My favorite part was the  unexpected paintings and pillows of famous people in vintage styles. So cool and unexpected and tasteful and fun.If you have a minute, the hotel photo gallery is worth a scroll, HERE.

All these pics really make me want to plan a date night!

Do you have a color that you love no matter the season? What color do you see most of when you look in your closet?

Just ran up to check mine (lol) and see lots of white, gray and denim with shades of red and pink… kinda makes me want to organize things by color.

OOTW: SWEATER DRESSES + MOM STYLE

I’ve been chatting with some of my mom friends both online and in person lately about their style wants and needs and for the most part, they all have similar answers:

TO LOOK STYLISH-COOL-EFFORTLESS WHILE FEELING COMFY-RELAXED

Pretty much sums it up, yeah?

I’ve got some fun stuff planned for us around this updated idea of mom-style for the start of the new year (so freakin excited about it!) but today I thought I’d share my favorite way to elevate a comfy outfit and that is with fun, quirky, trendy or unexpected accessories.

I know this isn’t a new concept. We all know accessories are a great way to make an outfit pop a little it’s just that I’ve got some great tips for pulling from a longer list of accessories, getting outta your comfort zone and having fun without trying too hard. I’ll get further into that list as the new year approaches (sorry, not sorry for the teaser… again, too excited to not share a little).

For today we’ll stick to talking about this comfy sweater dress (wearing size 6), my current favorite sneakers and all the cute socks.

We were mostly running errands on this day so I kept things pretty simple and added my favorite quirky (velcro on adult sneakers qualifies I think, lol) shoes and patterned socks. For chillier days I’d add a pair of ripped boyfriend or straight leg jeans under my dress and a cross-body bag over the top or a felt hat. Swapping out my sneakers for a pair of mules or oxfords would be v cute too. So many options!

This also happened to be the day I tripped over backwards while holding Poppy, in front of my husbands co-workers. Poor guys.

Not my finest moment. You can see the evidence on my left calf in the bottom picture… Where’s the monkey emojis when you need them?

Mom life forever.

What are your hangups, needs and wants when getting dressed for your busy days of kid wrangling?

Would love for you to send this post to any and all of your mama friends you think would be interested in more tips and tricks for “on duty mom” type style. I’ll take all the feedback I can get and find that there is so much more to the topic of fashion and style for moms than just the clothes… like confidence, purpose and identity and I want you all to know just how amazing and awesome you are!

XO, Rae

PS – Don’t forget to sign up for emails!

PPS – Thanks for being so sweet about my blog and instagram posts from yesterday! It always feels a little awkward sharing more of my story and journal-y thoughts but I love how it makes this online space more personal and meaningful. Makes me wish we could chat about all the deep life things over coffee or a large glass of wine… Maybe one day!

OOTW, THROWBACK TRAINERS + PLAYING WITH GRIFFIN

The best thing to happen to motherhood since baby carriers and wet wipes has got to be the sneakers with everything trend. I mean, the ability to wear most items in your closet AND also be able to chase after or play with a kid or two is brilliant. I’m a fan of the chunky (slash ugly) trainer and have had my eye on this pair (in all leather) but can never find them in my size and color preference so snagged these reeboks instead which are more of a throwback than chunky but also less expensive and I love them! And the best thing to happen to this plain t-shirt is for sure, this cute camisole. I tend to feel overdressed in a silk top but the two together strikes a perfect balance and feels special without being too stuffy for all the glamorous things I do all day (i.e. target runs, grocery shopping, picking all the things up off the floor, carpool + dishes). Even better, ditch the tee and add a leather jacket for date night! (just got this one for under $100)

(All blue, head to toe! GRIFFIN’S tee from j. crew, adidas sweatshirt from amazon, joggers from rockets of awesome and new balance shoes are from j.crew.)

Gah! I love this hand holding, high energy boy so much! Last week Johan and I picked him up a few minutes early from school to surprise him with a quick fro-yo date. On the way home Johan mentioned on the car ride that he only had one week left of soccer so I followed up with a question about playing next year to which he answered — “I’m kinda thinking I’ll play football instead” — it’s the best, most exciting but also stressful thing when they grow up and start making independent decisions like that!!! My reply was of course one I thought would make him think hard — “Do you think you’ll be able to hit and tackle other kids?”  — and he replied, “I tackle dad all the time!”

Ok. You win Griff. I will always try my best (with loads of wisdom of course) to support your ambitions and dreams. But I will also be praying that I get to see you play soccer next fall, lol.

When you have more than one kid, it’s easy to encourage them to play with each other outside while you do something productive (pick weeds, sweep the porch, clean out the car). But spending time playing with Griff and a soccer ball reminded me how productive it is for our relationship which carries over into our day and home and feels so good. My own dad was really good at playing outside with us. Lots of basketball, riding bikes and going for runs together so I speak from experience how powerful it can be… it’s just too easy to forget sometimes!

So, here’s my official NOTE TO SELF:

play more catch. play more tackle. play more tag.

Does playing come naturally to you or is it something that requires more intention?

Now that the weather is getting chilly, I for sure need to be more intentional about it. I’m always so cold! Sometimes my todo list gets the best of me too… adulting is hard!

SWEATER WEATHER + HELLO CUPCAKE

Last Friday after a busy week and what felt like forever since Johan and I had a chance to chat or hangout for more than 5 minutes, we took Poppy out for a little date to Hello Cupcake in Tacoma. It was such a fun and needed break and as you can tell, I’m  a happy girl anytime there’s a coffee and cupcake (or 12) in my hands!

Also love that “sweater weather” means I get to add a cozy, textured layer to my usual jeans and a tee uniform. Bonus, every time I think or hear the word “cardigan”, I can’t help but sing, “Cardi-Cardi!” in my head. Ha! Add a bright color to the mix and it does wonders to brighten up tired eyes and a fading summer tan.

Linked outfit details and more pics from our outing below!

(I typically favor cozy quarters over a giant home, but dream of having a prep kitchen with a giant pantry and fridge hidden behind swinging doors with round windows like above. A little over the top but think of how amazing it would be!)

We ordered a dozen mini cupcakes to grub on and share with friends before Ozzie’s football game later that evening. Plus one to eat right away of course! Gotta love places that make their sweets in a tiny size for kids and adults to enjoy. No sugar rush (and invitable meltdown) for them or sugar crash for us.

As we walked down the street with our basically homemade cupcakes from a small shop and stared through the windows of other small shops and restaurants along the way, I thought about how much I love supporting small businesses and appreciate the people who put their heart, creativity and finances out there to make our communities thrive and our everyday lives feel extra special. It’s honestly heroic in it’s own way — even if it means paying $2 for one mini cupcake when you could buy twelve for $5 at target. The value is so much greater. And the lack of preservatives is pretty awesome too.

I’M WEARING | sweater also available here (I sized up 1 for a bigger fit), vintage tee, jeans (similar. also saving up for these), shoes

POPPY’S WEARING | leggings, sweatshirt, hat

Our little outing also made me wonder what kind of a shop I would open…? As much as I have dreamt about opening up a clothing or home goods store (for the obvious personal perks), I would for sure open up a bakery that also served ice cream and breakfast until 10pm (def. the reason I should never open a store, lol — way too hard to decide on a niche!)…. something about knowing my bakery slash cafe would be a great place for family and friends to gather or grab treats for an afternoon pick-me-up or special occasion would give me lyfe.

Do you guys ever daydream about what kind of a shop or small business you would open? Tell me bout it in the comments!

XO, Rae

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK (OOTW): A DENIM JUMPSUIT + SNEAKERS

For today’s OOTW (outfit of the week post) I’m sharing the newest addition to my coverall slash jumpsuit collection which I think you’ll love for two reasons 1. denim! and 2. it’s belted! So if  you’ve been looking for a coverall with a little more shape, look no more. I’ll link outfit details below!

Excuse my messy, in-need-of-a-shampoo, hair! It was definitely a hat wearing kinda day, but looked like I worked at an auto repair shop when I tried one on, lol.

When in doubt, wear sneakers! Which is my motto when getting dressed, lol. Can you tell? I’ve been trying to mix in more flats and booties, but always gravitate towards a cute and functional pair of kicks. These are extra functional because, Velcro! And I love the pop of color (can’t see it as well in this pic) around the sole. Also love this pair… so hard to choose!

OUTFIT | coveralls are TOPSHOP from Nordstrom (wearing my usual topshop size 6), striped tee from J.Crew (perfect sleeve length + 40% off rn), sneakers by Veja (fit true to size)

Excited to start this new series with you! Let me know if there are any looks or trends you’d like to see :)

Happy Friday friend!

XO, Rae
