On Valentine’s Day we…

Eat emoji pancakes and homemade whip cream.

Wear pink hoodies (on sale!) and heart socks (Ozzie).

Run out of time to do our hair before heading to school (note Griffin’s bedhead).

Give neck hugs (Poppy).

Run calls at the fire station (sorry honey!)…. not sure when the last time was that Johan wasn’t working on the 14th of February. Not complaining tho! We make up for it on a much less busy night :)

Are beyond excited to handout our cards and treats to classmates.

Wish we could go back to elementary school, just for the day (me!).

Bail on the classroom parties to work, ensure a good nap for Poppy, and prep for the evening (also me).

Have friends come home on the bus and then run all over the house looking for clues in a scavenger hunt that lead to candy necklaces and silly string.

Have a silly string fight.

Eat soup and heart shaped quesadillas for dinner while sipping on the red gatorades our sweet friends brought over.

Consume wayyyy tooooo muuuuch sugar (all of us).

Fall asleep way past bedtimes (also all of us).

Hope you guys had the best v-day! What was your favorite part(s)?

xo, Rae

Nothing says LOVE like a boombox serenade! Or in Espen’s case, a bluetooth serenade :)

Put together a few songs that will get everyone dancing, feeling all the feels, and aren’t too heavy on the mushy side! I couldn’t decide on a specific genre so they’re a little random, however the playlist does start out fun and upbeat and gets more mellow towards the end so it’s perfect for that morning or evening grind.

  1. be my honeypie, the weepies
  2. best of my love, emotions
  3. wildflowers, tom petty
  4. stay stay stay, taylor swift
  5. i wanna dance with somebody, whitney houston
  6. man of the woods, justin timberlake
  7. i think we’re alone now, tiffany
  8. love me do, the beatles
  9. still got time, zayn
  10. all the pennies, mindy gledhill
  11. you are the best thing, ray lamontagne
  12. i got you babe, sonny + cher
  13. my sweet darling, seth fallen + the reaction
  14. die a happy man, thomas rhett
  15. i love you, alex + sierra
  16. bottom of the sea, matt nathanson
  17. sweet creature, harry styles
  18. i do, susie suh
  19. crazy love, van morrison
  20. at last, etta james

What songs would you add?

XO, Rae

HOORAY, we made it to the end of Jan-u-ar(a)y! LOL. Did it feel as long to you as it did to me? I guess it doesn’t really stand a chance to the few months and holidays that come before it, huh? However, it does feel good to have the first month of the year under my belt… and seeing as how we ate and netflixed our way through January, I mean that literally too. Is a “cheat month” a thing? (Asking for a friend :)

Anywho, I’ve rounded up a few recipes I’ve tried and loved or want to try in February. Half of them either look delicious or would be perfect for Valentine’s Day (can you say fondue, pasta and tomato bisque with grilled cheese, please!?) while the other half are gluten free and paleo. It’s all about balance, right?

  • bananas + peanut butter pinwheels
  • monster mouths (with marshmallows or nuts for teeth)
  • egg + cheese tacos or omelettes
  • mango protein shake (frozen mango + pineapple, almond or coconut milk, ice and vanilla protein (this is our favorite kind — not chalky!)
  • raviolis
  • edamame
  • french toast + fruit kabobs (perfect for Valentines Day!)
  • chicken salad pitas or lettuce cups
  • fresh veggies with tzatziki dip!

Which recipe looks most appealing to you? I’m kinda curious about the chicken bowl with cauliflower rice.

Feel free to add more recipe ideas in the comments…

Love you guys!

The Seattle weather this time of year just about does us all in, so we’re trying to stay busy and distracted over here. A homemade treat, kitchen experiments (slime anyone?), and simple crafts always seem to do the trick tho. If you’re feeling the same way, here are a few Valentines-ey projects that have been giving us life right now and make hunkering down at home feel extra special.

Shared the recipe on my Insta Stories yesterday and added to the “eat” highlight reel for safe keeping too, but it deserves to be documented here too… it’s that good! I cut way back on the chocolate compared to other recipes and will normally add the hearts after the kids dish their bowls so they don’t get too much :)

  • 5 oz. bag popcorn or 15 cups homemade, lightly salted
  • 6 oz. white chocolate, melted
  • sprinkles + conversation hearts

  1. Pour popcorn into a large baking sheet/pan.
  2. Drizzle with white chocolate and sprinkles and then toss until incorporated. Sprinkle hearts over the top. Cover and let sit until chocolate hardens.
  3. Dish up for your little (and big) valentines!

That don’t involve eating them although we know it’s inevitable. A few ideas…

  1. Pour a bunch in a jar and have the kids guess how many, then count together.
  2. Drop a few in a glass of sparkling water or clear soda and watch them dance around. Kinda fun and science-y!
  3. Play around with making and matching patterns, or sorting.
  4. Give everyone a box of hearts, set the timer for a minute (or 5, lol!) and see who can stack them the highest! When you’re done, grab a few snack items from the pantry and use the candies to make individual trail mixes.
  5. Practice fine motor skills with little ones by scooping, and tweezing  hearts from one bowl to another. Challenge older kids to use chopsticks. Here’s a few more montessori inspired activities!
  6. Take it one step further with these fun family night games. Would be fun for sleepovers too!

Can’t beat this classic! I found colored cardboard hearts and googly eyes at target and then cut up strips of text weight paper into strips. Set all the materials out on the table and let the kids get creative. Most of the finished hearts got taped to their bedroom doors which I love!

  • Hearts cutout of card stock or construction paper (found our hearts at Target, but couldn’t find online)
  • Googly eyes
  • Text weight paper, in various colors
  • Tape or glue stick
  • OPTIONAL: smaller hearts cutout for hands and feet, black marker for making a mouth + nose, stickers, pop-pops or other items to embellish with

  1. Cutout hearts and strips of paper for the arms and legs — ours were about 1-1/2 inch wide and 8-1/2 inch long for the legs and 5 inches for the arms.
  2. Fold the strips of paper like an accordion and tape onto the backside of your hearts.
  3. Embelish with eyes, etc. and you’re done!

Aren’t they cute!? And fun for everyone!

How are you guys having fun and staying sane at home on winter days!? This past Saturday we filled the stairway with mattresses so the kids could slide down, LOL. Anything to get some of their energy out these days!

Hope your week is off to a good start!!! Don’t forget to check classroom valentines off your to-do list!

XO, Rae

Thanks so much for your sweet response (+ orders) to our classroom valentines! Next step is finding the perfect surprise to include with the cards, because we all know the treat part is equally as important to the mini valentines in our lives. So, with the kids’ help, i’ve rounded up a list of favorites below.

1. parachute guys | 2. monster finger puppets | 3.  dragonfly propellers, or a combo pack | 4. googley eyes (that are already sticky on the backside!) | 5. cherry pop rocks | 6. candy necklaces | 7. ice cream shooters | 8. heart balloons here or here | 9. bouncy balls | 10. fluffy slime or play doh | 11. lip + mustache whistles | 12. paddle ball game | 13. unicorn pops | 14. glow sticks | 15. cat ear headbands | 16. pullback race cars | 17. squishy toys (tilly’s fave!) | 18. fruit candy | 19. unicorn poop | 20. plastic dinosaurs | 21. heart stickers | 22. candy buttons | 23. plastic clackers

Love and wish I could buy all these cute treats just to have on hand! Sometimes it’s the little things that go a long way.

What do your kids like giving their friends and classmates on Valentine’s Day? Excited to see what my kids’ final picks are so I can order and check it off my to do list!

PS — a few of my kids’ favorites below!

Gimme all the red, pink, and hearts this time of year, but I think there’s also something to be said for trying valentines day styles and decor that are a little less obvious. Since my kids (mostly the boys) agree wholeheartedly, I decided to keep that in mind while putting together outfits for all the classroom parties next week. While they will most likely be editing what I picked out, I think they turned out pretty cute and (BONUS!) will be wearable long after the Valentine festivities end.

POPPY’S HEART DAY DUDS | heart sunnies, target | hair clips, ryan and wren on etsy | bomber jacket , peek kids on sale | swing dress, june and january | leggings, peek kids on sale | metallic high tops, zara kids (similar here + here)

TILLY’S HEART DAY DUDS | striped tee, peek kids | denim pinafore, mini boden (similar here + here) | heart, eyes + fries before guys patches, | emoji, ice cream + monster patches from crewcuts | necklace, DIY here | big and small ice cream shooters, amazon

GRIFFIN’S HEART DAY DUDS | navy bomber, zara kids | eyes patches, | white button up, cat and jack | pizza patch, crewcuts | denim, peek | vans, nordstrom (similar here + here)

ESPEN’S HEART DAY DUDS | pizza shirt, crewcuts on sale | wild thing tee, peek kids (similar) | joggers, crewcuts | new balances, crewcuts (similar)

Espen’s outfit is my fave. If it could talk I think it would say… I like a good party and love pizza but don’t take all the lovey dovey heart day stuff too seriously. Which is exactly what most 4th grade boys are thinking so it’s perfect :)

Happy weekend you guys! Hope it’s a warm and cozy one. We’ll be spending ours running the kids around to their activities and putting all the finishing touches on our Valentine’s. Thankful for activities that keep us busy indoors right now because brrr!

Inspired by our love for eyeballs and faces put on any inanimate object and these adorable jammies that Poppy has, Tilly and I painted some happy little low-fuss hearts yesterday complete with facial expressions and patterned backgrounds. It was hard to stop making them but we’re all snowed in here (10-inches and still snowing!) today so I bet we’ll be painting more when we need to warm our bones!

YOU’LL NEED: poster board or thin cardboard, craft paint, paint brushes, a pencil and a sharpie or other black marker.

TO MAKE: I cut up a poster board (thin cardboard from a cereal box would work great too!) in various sizes. If you are using cardboard and want a white or non-kraft colored background, just brush a layer of paint over your pieces and let dry. Draw a heart on each piece and start painting! Once completely dry, use a sharpie or other black marker to add faces. ;)

Valentine’s Day is a little over a week away, I can’t believe it! We don’t have much in the way of Valentines decorations around here but these hearts add a nice festive touch. They would make a fun post card too.

How have you been getting in the Love Day mood?

xo, Rae
