5 THINGS: ON REPEAT RIGHT NOW

HAPPY FRIDAY! Not that it makes too much of a difference during the summer :) Things have been a little all-over-the-place around here for the last couple weeks so thought I’d focus on and share a few things that (like tan lines) have been on repeat so far this summer.

5 THINGS ON REPEAT LATELY…

1 SWIM LESSONS | They’re ending tomorrow but Espen and Tilly have been going everyday since school got out and it was such a great way to start the summer. Gave us just the right amount of structure and a set time to have our chores and work finished by. Sad to see them end!

2 KARAOKE CARPOOL | Especially this one and this one. They are fun to watch when I need a little break or some “company” during late night laundry folding seshes.

3 MOM ON | Another youtube find (HERE) that makes me feel better about the next thing on repeat…

4 DINO CHICKEN NUGGETS | After years of avoiding these cookie cutter nuggets, I’ve given in this summer and am mostly happy about it. They are easy in every way, filling, and the kids devour them. I usually pickup a bag of Market Panty ones at Target. Serve with a smoothie for lunch or baked fries and fruit salad for dinner and I’m their favorite person in the world!

5 SUMMER #OOTD | Would wear this tank everyday with a cute bandana and sandals (on sale) or a hat, sunnies and slides.

What have you been doing, eating, wearing, this summer so far!?

WHEN IN DOUBT, HEAD TO THE BEACH!

That is exactly what we did over the long weekend and it’s safe to say we played hard and had lots of fun! Johan had to be back at work on Monday so our weekend was cut short a bit, but Saturday and Sunday we packed up and spent time at my parent’s house and lake. Between our work schedules lately (yay for those hard working daddies!) and the boy’s baseball, two full days together felt like pure bliss!

A few pics from our time together…

Griffin rarely lets me out of his sight (a serious clinger) unless he has a friend around and then I’m NBD. Makes me appreciate more and more the time I have him all to myself. One day he’ll be taller and busier and it will be harder to steal kisses so you know what I’ll be doing in the meantime!

I know from experience… You’ll notice Oz isn’t in any pics. He and a friend were with us but taking pictures of  16 year old boys is hard if not impossible. Unless of course it’s a snapchat pic from their phones (sighhhh).  On the upside, teenage boys are highly entertaining and fun to be around!

I mentioned on Instagram that we haven’t quite mastered the art of family bike rides. However, my parent’s neighborhood is a really good place to practice. Everyone grabs something with wheels and we hit the road — abandoning ride-on toys, kissing scraped knees, and looking like a hot mess as we go.

It’s my favorite thing to hang back a bit and watch the beautiful mess of it all while kindly shouting every once in awhile for people to slow down, stay together, be careful, and don’t go past the…. Ha! Maybe I’m the reason our bike rides/walks feel so chaotic?! Either way, when it’s not stressing me out, it’s the best view.

Still in swimsuits at 8pm… What summer dreams are made of!

5th child ^^^ The FOMO is real.

There’s that view!

Day 2 looked a lot like day 1…

Tilly trying to persuade me to hop on a paddle board with her the second we arrive on the beach, while I try to convince her that sitting in the sun for a bit while taking it all in and sipping on a LaCroix before jumping in the water is where it’s at!

We compromised… I hopped on the paddle board with her and a LaCroix and she promised not to tip us over. :)

Waiting for my paddler.

*I would not ordinarily post a picture of myself in a swimsuit, but since it’s that time of year and most of us are looking for something cute and functional to wear while playing with the kids, I thought I would take one for the team and share one of the suits that works for me! The top is last season from Victoria’s Secret but my bottoms are from Kortni Jean. I have a top from her line and love how easy her pieces are to mix and match with other suits I have too. I’ll share links below!

I’ve also had my eyes on swimmers by Albion… has anyone purchased from them?

Watermelon break!

And some pineapple too…?

Since Johan had to work Monday the kids and I hung-out at home. They caught up with friends while I caught up on laundry and spent a lot of time thinking about how this weekend probably feels and looks so different for those families who know personally the cost of our freedom. Those who might cringe a little when the word “happy” is placed before memorial day. If that’s you, and I’m not even sure that I have the words or understanding, but I do want you to know I was thinking of you. Thank you for everything you have and continue to sacrifice for me and my family and for our country. I do hope you felt extra honored and loved over the weekend.

XO, Rae

SPRING BREAK RECAP…

So, last week came in like a lamb and out like a lion which I guess is appropriate for Spring break :) We had lots of rainy days in the beginning so took it slow and had a lot of dance parties. But then the sun decided to join us so we were able to do some adventuring towards the end! Overall we ate yummy food, kept the kids up way past their bedtime and ignored the mountain of laundry so I would say it was a successful (and always needed) break from school and our normal routine.

A few pics from our week!

Lunch at a favorite spot in Tacoma, Shake Shake Shake. The best fries and shakes! The younger kids got corn dogs and the older ones ordered giant cheese burgers. Can’t remember the last time we all ate that much… I thought we would be rolling people out of there!

Ketchup art by Griffin but Tilly would like to take credit for inspiring the idea. She would like to take credit for this next shot too… :)

Espen will be 11 this year which totally and completely blows my mind! He’s the sweetest most helpful and positive person I know and I just can’t get enough of those freckles on his nose.

My favorite thing to do after eating way too much is get some fresh air and go for a walk so the fam bam obliged and we headed to Pointe Rustin to walk along the beach and play at the playground and then ultimately wound up searching for crabs. Washington beaches aren’t often sandy or sunbathing worthy, but they sure to occupy the kids and it’s always so fun to see their excitement!

Or total horror, LOL. Poppy spent most of the time deciding whether she liked the crabs or was scared of them. I don’t blame her one bit. The next pic is me feeling very proud of myself for holding a non-pinching baby crab, the size of an almond, in my hand. If any of our kids end up being total whimps I will be to blame for sure.

Feels so good to be outside without having to bundle up to stay warm and dry!

It wasn’t long before someone drove by in a golf cart and asked us not to throw rocks in the water. Oops. We tried really hard to follow these instructions but srsly, how do you keep 5 kids from throwing rocks in a body of water? Let’s just say, many reminders were needed.

Almost forgot! Ozzie’s High School team was able to play 3 games over break which must be some kinda early spring record! Griff was thrilled about it, obvi. I honestly think the hardest part about having various age kids playing sports is making sure the younger ones don’t get totally burnt out or resentful.

On one of the rainier days we decided to take a quick outing to visit the lake near our house, dream about summer days, and also get donuts. It was a couple hours very well spent.

As you can see, our spring break was kinda random and with all the bad weather, somedays didn’t feel as much like a break as I usually like. Luckily (if you saw this post on Instagram, then you already know), I messed up our calendar and booked our spring break vacay for later this month. We’ll be headed to the ocean in a couple weeks for a second (shorter) spring break! I felt terrible at first but think it will end up being a really good thing.

Have any spring travel plans?

5 THINGS + HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Last Tuesday we celebrated a break from the constant drizzle and rain with a walk outside and trip to Starbucks for lunch and a treat. So when the weather app on my phone called for sunshine yesterday we did a happy dance and then headed out the door to play at Volunteer Park (a new-to-us park) and our favorite ice cream shop, Molly Moon’s. I heard on the news a couple days ago that the Seattle area has only gotten 5 days of sunshine since January 1st. As my husband pointed out (he’s all numbers all the time), that’s only 1 in every 15 days!!! No wonder I’ve threatened to move us all to Palm Springs several times over the last month, LOL. Craving that sunshine and thankful to get a little fix yesterday.

Here’s a few other things I’ve been thankful for this week:

  1. Mama got a brand new…. car! A Honda Pilot to be exact and I’m totally smitten with it. We’ve been without a car payment (and loving it) for so long it was hard to agree to another bill but now that I’m driving carpool with warm buns (heated seats) and bluetooth, there is no turning back!
  2. We made a quick visit to Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill yesterday and had a blast. So much to do. Will definitely be going back soon.
  3. Afterwards we walked on a rainbow crosswalk on our way to get ice cream and decided that all crosswalks should be rainbow colored. Yes?
  4. Last night we started a new St. Patrick’s Day tradition when the kids insisted on making a leprechaun trap. One of the things I appreciate most about St. Patrick’s Day is how low-key it is. Other than making sure everyone has something green to wear, there isn’t much planning involved so was a little resistant to their idea but in the end we all had fun and listening to their sweet conversations about leprechauns and how to catch one was the absolute best entertainment. Worth the mess and late bedtime.
  5. Monday is the first day of… S P R I N G ( ! ! ! )

If looks could kill, #amiright? Poor girl hasn’t been acting like herself this week — mostly grumpy and really clingy with moments of cheerfulness. Planning on feeding her smoothies and probiotics all weekend in hopes that whatever is bugging her clears up because a clingy kid is one thing but a moody clingy kid is another and #imsotired.

Griffin, on the other hand, has no shortage of energy or joy! Constantly running at 100 this boy.

Literally. Ha!

(Can you spot where Griffin cut a chunk of his hair? Luckily he’s in need of a haircut anyways :)

We’ve started making our Spring bucket list this week. At the top is flying kites, a weekend getaway close to home, and trying new homemade ice cream recipes. I also wanted to add — clean out ever closet, drawer and cupboard in our house — but the kids argued that only fun things can be added to our list, LOL.

What’s on your Spring to do list!? We could use a few more ideas.

xo, Rae

PS – If you missed Monday’s meal plan, I recommend giving it a try next week. It was a good one and pretty easy to keep up with!

5 THINGS: FAVORITE LIP STICK SHADES FOR SPRING

You guys! It’s Friday and I’m super excited to share my current rotation of lipstick shades with ya, yet slightly embarrassed of the montage of selfies above (and below). Unfortunately I couldn’t think of a more practical way of showing different lip colors, so lets just pretend that making silly faces in front of the camera is a normal adult thing to do (ha!) and skip to the good stuffs!

1. THIS IS THE BALM | agave lip balm by BITE that is! I know this isn’t technically a lipstick, but ever since finding it at Sephora about a month ago it’s become an everyday staple. I love that it leaves just a touch of glossy shine and has made my cracked wintery lips feel so much better. (Another example pic below.)

(I have the best little sidekick — Tilly!)

2. BARELY THERE PINKRunway Hit in Retro Matte Nudes by MAC adds just a hint of color that makes me feel/look refreshed without making much of a statement. Perfect for everyday. Tempted to buy a couple more shades in this collection! Pictured in the next image too…

3. I NUDE IT WAS YOU | Viva Glam II by MAC a pinky-brown-mauve color that reminds me of my Grandma’s old couch… in a good way. It’s also a new buy and quick favorite!

4. IN A MOODY | Growing up mostly in Seattle means I have a little grunge rocker in my blood and this Lolita liquid matte lipstick by Kat Von D is proof. I haven’t worn it all that much but it’s a fun one to have in my stash and not too loud for everyday wear.

5. LOVERS CORAL |  Tilt by Urban Decay at Sephora is a color I purchased last fall with the help of a friend and am always excited when my outfit or plans for the day call for a pop of color… just can’t quit this shade of coral!

Do you have a favorite brand or color lipstick!?

XO, Rae

P.S. – I’ve always wanted to be the person that comes up with names for lipstick and nail polish colors, can you tell? Ha!

ICE CREAM MAKES YOU HAPPY + 5 THINGS

These pics have zero to do with the context of this post but they do remind me that warmer, sun kissed, ice cream eating days are ahead. Not that we’re ever not eating ice cream but you get the idea.

In the meantime I’m going to try and be better about living in the in-between, i.e. the moments and seasons that are a not as easily enjoyed. I’ve had so many of them over the years  (like, every winter) and when the season passes I’m always wishing I would have squeezed a little more goodness out of it.

In an effort to live more in the in-between, here are a few things that I’ve loved this week!

  1. Tilly (8) shared, after 20 or so minutes of playing family (aka house) with her two younger siblings yesterday that, “Being a mom feels riiiily good.” (Girlfriend you have no idea the richness you kids bring to my life!) Then she continued, “But I still want to adopt!” She is terrified of pregnancy and childbirth and doesn’t even know all the details yet, ha! So curious to see what she ends up doing and being when she’s grown up! Side note, if you have a wide age range of kids I highly recommend encouraging playing house. Tilly ended up giving Poppy and Griffin their baths last night while playing the mom. I still had to check her work and wipe all the water off our bathroom floor, but checking tubbies off the bedtime to-do list at 5 o’clock felt oh so good.
  2. Poppy pronounces waffles, awwwwfuls and it’s about the cutest thing. It’s also been her reply for the last week when I ask her what she wants for breakkie.
  3. Johan and Espen had their first little league baseball practice last night. Seems a little premature seeing as how it snowed here yesterday but who am I to get in the way of boys and their baseball? Also makes me feel like we are one step closer to Spring!
  4. Johan and I have started doing garage workouts more regularly (at 5am — gah!) and I’m kinda proud of us for making the effort. It’s mostly circuit training using movements and simple equipment like burpees, mountain climbers, kettle bells, box jumps and a jumprope. I’d be happy to share a few of my favorite combos if anyone is interested?
  5. We are doing this study with a group of friends and so far it’s been life changing. Last week we discussed the things a soul needs to be healthy: rest, restriction, responsibility/work, and relationship. For anyone with kids I would add date night and wine (ha!), but that’s just me. What do you think of the list? Would you add or take anything away?

Big brothers that pinch you with their toes (3 pics up), pretend to eat your birthday cake (2 pics up), and then assume you’ll be okay about picking you up (1 pic up). I remember being so annoyed with Oz for pestering the little kids during the shoot, but am ironically so happy to have these real life kind of pictures in a staged setting.

Even after all that teasing Poppy still asks for her biggest brother about 5 times per day… “Where’s my Ozzie brover?”

Also completely unrelated to the pics above, the last few items for the dinning room came in the mail this week so I’m hoping to finish things up over the weekend for a reveal on Monday!!! A finished project is good for the soul too!

What are you up to this weekend?

xo, Rae
